The Preschool Experience

Preschoolers are children aged 3 to 5 years old. Many CGL preschoolers are those who have spent a year with us in a Toddler classroom and have graduated” to preschool. However, there are many preschoolers who join CGL at the beginning of their first or second year of preschool. The majority of preschoolers attend CGL two to three days per week, although some children attend as many as five days per week. There are three preschool classrooms, each with two teachers for 12-14 children. In addition, there is an assistant who floats through these classrooms throughout the day.

Each of the three classrooms is multi-aged, meaning there is a balanced number of 3, 4 and 5 year olds in each room. There is evidence of many potential benefits to both children and adults when children are mixed with others of different ages.  The accumulated evidence of mixing ages throughout the elementary school years indicates there are consistent social benefits in the form of important life skills. Learn more about the benefits of mixed age classrooms.

When a child steps into a CGL preschool classroom he or she is surrounded by a comforting, home-like environment full of natural and thought-provoking materials. Children are welcome to independently select materials, companions, and to manage their play independently. As they discover areas of art, blocks, creative play, sciences, math, practical life and literacy, teachers observe and document each child’s development.
